The Same Website, Half the Weight
More than 30,000 files nobody was using were taken out, without a single image breaking and without changing how the website looks.
Almost every website built with WordPress creates a copy of each photo at different sizes every time you upload one. Nobody ever deletes them. On this one, with more than ten years of content, there were sixteen per photo: almost 95,000 stored files for about 5,400 actual images and documents. The space where it lived could no longer keep up, and they had been moved to a more expensive plan.
Our Solution:
- We mapped how many copies the website was creating of each photo, and which of them no part of the design was using.
- The copies nobody was using were taken out, leaving the ones the design does need.
- The images that stayed were made lighter, without changing how they look.
- All 7,689 images across the 589 pages were checked one by one, to confirm none of them had broken.
- It was left configured so it doesn't pile up again.
- A little over a week of work in total.
What Changed for the Client:
- The website ended up half as heavy.
- More than 30,000 files that weren't being used were taken out.
- Not a single image broke: all 7,689 are still in place.
- They were left able to go back to a cheaper plan.
- And it doesn't pile up again: every photo uploaded now leaves four files fewer.
